So when somebody offers to give away gasoline, don’t be surprised if the freebie attracts crowds of motorists like you’d find on Interstate 25 during rush hour.
Kum & Go, the Midwest convenience store chain that opened its first Pikes Peak region store this summer, will reward 150 motorists with free fill-ups this week to mark its entrance into the local market.
Fifty motorists at each of three Kum & Go locations in the Springs will receive up to 12 gallons of gasoline. The stores also will offer discounts on food and beverage items, such as hot and cold fountain drinks for a quarter plus $1 pizza slices.
Kum & Go CEO Kyle Krause said the convenience store chain is seeking to build relationships in the area — through its investment in new stores and its charitable donations.
The free gasoline will be available at noon Thursday at 7375 Duryea Drive, west of Powers Boulevard and Woodmen Road; 5 p.m. Friday at 1206 InterQuest Parkway, which is part of InterQuest Marketplace east of I-25 and InterQuest; and at noon Saturday at 2190 Vickers Drive, northwest of Vickers and Academy Boulevard.
Lines will form one hour before the free fill-ups begin, and Kum & Go employees will pump the gas.
Kum & Go, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, opened its first store at Vickers and Academy on June 1; the Duryea and InterQuest locations opened this month.
Kum & Go expects to open five more area stores by year’s end. Other locations include Powers Boulevard and North Carefree Circle, and Tutt Boulevard and Barnes Road, on Colorado Springs’ east side; in Briargate on the city’s north side; in Monument north of the Springs; and in Fountain south of town.
Kum & Go says it plans a total of 20 to 25 stores over five years in the Pikes Peak region. The company says its investment — including 5,000-square-foot, company-owned stores built from the ground up — will total about $90 million.
