Wal-Mart is hiring 90 people for a Neighborhood Market store under construction on South Academy Boulevard, the second of at least four of the smaller groceries that the retailer plans in Colorado Springs.
On Monday, Wal-Mart opened a hiring center at its first area Neighborhood Market store at 655 N. Murray Blvd., northeast of Platte Avenue and Murray on the Springs’ east side. That hiring center will field job applicants for a store that’s targeted to open in January near South Academy and Chelton Road on the south side. The hiring center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.
The retailer is hiring to fill full- and part-time positions in all areas, such as cashiers, pharmacy employees and supervisors, said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Delia Garcia. Most employees will start work in November to help prepare the store for its opening. Applicants also can apply at any Wal-Mart store or online at http://careers.walmart.com.
Wal-Mart has a major presence locally with nine supercenters and two Sam’s Club stores. Last year, it announced it would bring its Neighborhood Market concept to the area — stores that are about one-fourth the size of its supercenters and on the order of Safeway, King Soopers and other groceries. Neighborhood markets have full lines of food, produce, meat, dairy products and the like, along with health and beauty products, laundry detergent and pet food, among other items.
The Neighborhood Market at Platte and Murray opened in August. In addition to that store and the one on South Academy, Wal-Mart officials have confirmed plans to build a Neighborhood Market at Union Boulevard and Lelaray Street in central Colorado Springs, and will remodel a former Albertsons at Academy and Austin Bluffs Parkway on the northeast side.
In September, Wal-Mart completed the purchase of a 4.3-acre site at Union and Lelaray, El Paso County land records shows. Garcia said Wal-Mart is aiming for a fall 2013 opening for the stores at Union and Lelaray and in the former Albertsons location.
